Dog Training in Georgetown, TX: What to Expect From Your First Session

It Starts With an Honest Conversation

Before I ever put a leash on your dog, I need to understand what's really going on. Most owners reach out because something specific pushed them over the edge — maybe the dog lunged at a neighbor, destroyed the couch for the third time, or they just can't walk down the street without a scene.

That's where we start. I'll ask about your dog's daily routine, history, triggers, and what you've already tried. No judgment. Half the dogs I work with have been through other programs that didn't stick. That doesn't mean your dog is broken — it usually means the approach wasn't right.

The Evaluation: Reading Your Dog

Once we've talked, I observe your dog in their own environment. This is critical. A dog acts differently at home than they do at a training facility, and I need to see the real version — not the one performing for a new setting.

I'm looking at body language, energy levels, how they respond to you, how they react to pressure, and what motivates them. Every dog is different. A high-drive Malinois and a nervous rescue mix need completely different approaches, and that evaluation is what tells me which path to take.

If you're here in Georgetown, TX, I'll typically come to your home or meet you at a local park where your dog's usual behaviors show up naturally.

Building the Plan

After the evaluation, I'll walk you through exactly what I see and what I recommend. This isn't a sales pitch — it's a straight answer. Some dogs need five sessions of functional training. Others need the full 30-45 day board and train program. And some just need their owner to learn how to communicate more clearly.

I'll tell you the timeline, the approach, and what your role will be. Training doesn't work if the owner isn't involved, and I'll be upfront about what I'll need from you between sessions.

What You Should Bring

For your first session, keep it simple:

  • Your dog on their regular leash and collar (no retractable leashes)
  • High-value treats your dog actually cares about
  • A calm mindset — your dog reads your energy
  • Water for your dog if we're meeting outdoors

That's it. No special equipment, no prep work. Just show up ready to learn alongside your dog.

What Happens After the First Session

Once we've completed the evaluation and agreed on a plan, I'll send you a summary of everything we discussed — the behaviors I identified, the program I'm recommending, and the specific goals we're working toward. This isn't a generic template. It's a roadmap built for your dog.

If we're doing in-home sessions, I'll also give you homework. Simple exercises to practice between sessions that reinforce what we covered. The owners who do the homework see results two to three times faster than those who don't. Training is a partnership, and the work you put in between sessions matters just as much as the sessions themselves.

For dogs entering the board and train program, I'll walk you through exactly what the 30-45 days look like — the daily schedule, the environments we'll train in, and how I'll document your dog's progress so you can follow along every step of the way.

Setting Expectations

Here's something I always tell new clients: training is not a one-day fix. Your first session is about laying the foundation — understanding where your dog is, where they need to be, and how we're going to get there.

You'll likely see improvement in your dog's focus and responsiveness within the first session, but real, lasting change takes repetition and consistency. That's why every program I offer includes follow-up support. I'm not interested in quick fixes that fall apart the moment you get home.

The timeline depends on your dog. Basic obedience can see significant improvement in five sessions. Reactivity and behavior modification typically takes three to five sessions. And dogs with deep-rooted issues benefit most from the full immersion experience. I'll always give you a realistic timeline — never a promise I can't keep.
